So I may have mentioned last time, NZ is much bigger than it appears on a map. We thought that having 3 weeks would be plenty of time to see both the north and south islands and have a nice relaxing trip. Every time a Kiwi asks us how much time we have they always always exclaim that it's such a small amount and "good luck!". We've decided that it's not totally the fault of Google maps that makes NZ look small, it's also partially due to the speed limit of 100kmph. Now coming from the States and seeing that you can go 100, mentally makes you think that you're going really fast when in reality it's only about 62mph. That is 62mph on the "freeway", country roads, you name it unless posted otherwise. Now NZ doesn't have what we think of as freeways, there's no 4 lane I80 or I5 or for those that have been to the UK, there's no such think as an M1 except for the snarly bits around cities (ie. Auckland- the one true city that we've been to so far) and even those aren't so bad.
What NZ does have is sharp hills and mountains...everywhere. This makes for beautiful scenery but very curvy roads thus reducing the speed quite a bit. However this does not seem to dissuade the huge tanker trucks from taking curves at the upper limit that physics will allow and both Ben and I flinch overtime we pass one going the opposite direction as a small part of our brain still thinks we're driving on the wrong side of the road!
Now today we made pretty good time starting in the Coromandel Peninsula and are now below Tongariro National Park. We left early this morning and booked it through mainly farmlands of sheep and cows. The scenery really is amazingly beautiful and breathtaking at almost every turn, though it's the type of landscape that is not easily captured with a camera.
The main event of today was black water rafting at the Waitomo Caves. Basically inner-tubing down an underground river filled with glowworms. Our guides equipped us with a wet suit, boots, helmet with light and an inner-tube. After a quick practice jump into the water above ground they led us to steps leading into the rock and underground, literally a hole in the ground! Once underground there was walking through the shallow parts, tubing down the deeper parts, jumping off small waterfalls and turning off the lights to float down the river with a starry sky of glowworms above us. While the water was refreshingly brisk (I'd lost fine motor skills of my fingers when we finished) it was such a fantastic opportunity and adventure! And we were welcomed with a hot shower and soup at the end, ah bliss!
Another 3 hours drive south from Waitomo we were graced with fantastic views of Mt. Ruapehu (North Island's tallest mountain covered in snow), Mt. Ngauruhue (aka Mt Doom for the LOTR fans) and Mt. Tangariro. All three a active volcanoes and were quite the stark contrast to the green hills dotted with sheep we were surrounded by while driving.
Tomorrow is shaping up to be another fun filled day of adventure and driving!

how amazing! I want to go in that glowworm cave. and to see Mt Doom! (uh, I mean Mt. Ngauruhue...)
Glad you made it to Waitomo, its fun fun fun.
Enjoy NZ! Half my family lives there and we spend a lot of time (mostly on the East Coast of the North Island, Bay of Plenty). Wellington is cool too like Auckland. South Island is more big and slow driving, with some cool places like Queenstown in between. But be on the lookout for wine and seafood!
Enjoy!
