Finding our hotel in Liberia was fairly easy and then off to find some dinner and wander through town and pick up some necessities (water, cookies and nuts for snacks and of course some Imperial beer in a can, we are going real classy on this trip). As luck would have it our hotel also had a pool which was perfect for taking a night dip to cool off from the stickiness of the day.
This morning we grabbed breakfast and then headed out for our first real driving experience on our way to Monteverde cloud forest. Driving on the highway felt almost like driving on 99 near Chico and then we turned left. Our road went from paved to dirt with chunky rocks and made me grateful that we had sprung for the 4 wheel drive. It's amusing that one of the biggest tourist destinations in CR has worse country roads than Big Springs. We eventually made it to our destination and didn't even get lost even though we felt we were lost the whole time.
We had time to get lunch at the Treehouse Cafe, which is precisely what it was and then a tour of the butterfly gardens.
There weren't too many butterflies flitting around as it was getting close to evening but we did get to see some really cool ones. In particular the large Owl butterfly whose wing looks like the profile of an owl's head, huge eye and all. They are more nocturnal and were chasing each other all through the enclosure. We got to see some pretty crazy insects including one that looks exactly like moss.
This evening we went on a night hike in the hopes of seeing a sloth but no luck for that. We did however get to see a Side Striped Palm Pit Viper which can be rare to see.
We also saw two tarantulas one hand sized and the other a little bit smaller.
Aside from those big names we saw a variety of beetles and other bugs.
Tomorrow is up early for a hike and then we will see what the afternoon brings.
