Feliz Año Nuevo!

Well we are now on our way out of Guatemala. It really has felt like a nonstop party the whole time we've been here. Today we had to wake up at 5.30am to catch our shuttle and it was by far the earliest we ever woke up.
New Year's Eve day was spent recovering from whatever late night activities happened the night before and preparing ourselves for the evening festivities.
The Posada does a big NY eve dinner every year and of course we all attended. Food, champagne, wine and conversation were all fabulous, as would be expected. We then chartered a boat to take us across the lake to San Pedro (the hippy labyrinth as Jake described it) to ring in the New Year. San Pedro was exactly that, a hippy labyrinth. I'm convinced that you could take the entire town and drop it in the middle of Burning Man and no one would notice. There were even a couple fire dancers at one of the bars we went to…
As we wandered around, one thing became very clear. We never far away from fireworks. Fireworks are huge in Guatemala particularly around NY. Jake had brought us our own stash and craziness ensued. Roman candles, sparklers and essentially what can only be described as mini bombs were all part of the festivities. Techno dance party in the street for the count down and you couldn't actually tell the difference when it turned midnight. Back to the fire dancer bar for more dancing and then rounding up our group of 11, like drunk kittens, to catch our boat back to the Posada. Hot tubbing, jumping in the pool and lake and trying to stay up until sunrise concluded the night. If the superstition of whatever you are doing on NY eve is a sign of what the rest of your year will be like, Ben and I are in for an exhausting year of partying.
Needless to say NY day was spent recovering, lounging, piña colada-ing and a lengthy game of Cataan. A fabulous dinner at the Posada with the last remaining few of our group.
The bar has been set extremely high for any future trips to Guatemala.
Things I learned:
1. It doesn't matter if it's light out, fireworks will still be going off.
2. My spanish was not as horrible as I thought it was going to be.
3. It really does only need to take 3 hours to get from the Posada to the airport in the city.
4. Flaming volcano cakes are awesome!
5. Fire dancing is a true hippy mating ritual.

okay, this all sounds amazing. At the risk of sounding like an old person I'm just going to say that it's awesome that you're doing all this now when you're young and it's so easy and appealing. Way to go!
Also, next time, bring your little cousin along, okay? :)
