Yesterday was mainly spent recovering from the wedding festivities with lots of lounging around. We eventually wandered into town to a bar that is owned by Jake's friend (and by we I mean the 15 of us under the age of 35 that were out of town guests). Of course this was after the power went out for the whole town. We trucked in, literally. There are two main types of public transportation within the town. The first are Tuk Tuks, exactly like one would find in Asian countries. The second are pickup trucks crammed full with as many people as will fit in the bed. They're designed to stand up while the truck is moving so there are cross pieces to hold on to. Trucks of course are cheaper than Tuk Tuks but I'm unclear which is actually safer…
After spending many hours at the bar it was time to head home. Of course the Tuk Tuks were no longer running so Jake's friend gave us all a ride home. Yep 14 people crammed into a Nissan small SUV type car. It was the ultimate clown car scenario. It beats the 7 people we once crammed into my friend's Mini Cooper.
Today we headed across the lake by boat to Panajachel (or Pana). Pana is the main super touristy port on the lake, but we weren't there to catch the tourist scene, we were there for something much more exciting, zip lining!
The hike up the mountain to get to the start of the zip lines was quite taxing but well worth it. There were 7-8 zip lines crisscrossing the jungle as we made our way back down the mountain. The views were spectacular, as was the sensation of sailing through the air above the tree tops (or for those of us with long legs, grazing the tops of the trees).
After ziplining came food, boating to another fancy bar on top of a hill overlooking the lake for tasty mojitos and then back to the Posada.
Today's Only in Guatemala Moment: We'd been having problems with the pilot light staying on in the hot water heater. 10 minutes into a shower the water would turn cold and Ben would be forced to run outside and relight the pilot. We informed our host of the problem and after a morning of tinkering around he announced that a spider had moved into the propane line essentially blocking the flow to the pilot light. That must have been one happy spider...
